Key messages about the measles and MRR vaccination:

  • Measles can make people seriously ill, and rarely it can cause death.
  • Measles spreads very easily. Anyone who is not vaccinated can catch it.
  • The good news is we can be protected from measles by having the MMR vaccine.
  • It is safe, free, and effective.
  • You need two doses of the MMR vaccine for lifelong protection.
  • The MMR is usually given in 2 doses, first when babies are one year old, then again at 3 years and 4 months.
  • You can catch up on missed doses at any age, even as an adult.
  • Contact your GP practice if you or your child are not up to date with your vaccines to book an appointment.
  • An MMR vaccine that does not contain pork ingredients (gelatine) is available and it is just as safe and effective. Ask your GP practice if you want this one before your appointment, to make sure they have it in stock.
